OK, It’s Not a Cell Phone in the Washer — But Man, is it Sticky!

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

I love Dawn Meehan, author of Because I Said So… And Other Tales From a Less-Than-Perfect Parent. If you haven't checked out her blog, head over to Because I Said So.

The photo collage on her blog banner is so adorable. Reminds me of the photos (and other assorted family stuff) on my fridge.

I've written here about finding my son's cell phone in the washer. But I have ONE kid. Dawn, the mom of three boys and three girls, finds laundry day to be a continual adventure.

Fruit snacks in the dryer, anyone? (Yep, it's as much of a sticky mess as you'd imagine.)

Having one of those days? Go spend some time with Dawn and you'll know you're definitely not alone.

Want Free Shipping? Look Here

As a busy parent (and someone who is tired of watching too many dollars flow into my gas tank), I love the idea of shopping online. (What did I ever do before and their free shipping for any order of $25 or more?) Besides, we all know how much fun it is to drag our little ones from store to store…

Now there’s a website that will clue you in on lots of other online retailers that offer free shipping. Launched last December, includes more than 800 name-brand stores. You can search by brand or category.

You’ll find free-shipping offers from JCPenney, Target, Bloomingdale’s, Kohl’s, Sears, Best Buy, Old Navy, Nordstrom and many more.  Macy’s offers as many as 15 free shipping coupons at one time.

Just heard yesterday that’s stock is going up, up, up, and that it’s attributed to the fact that they offer this free-shipping deal to those of us who don’t want to waste gas running to brick-and-mortar stores. I love that so many stores are jumping on that bandwagon. And thanks to this great new site, it’s easier than ever to find them.

Wow,… Diapers, Too?

The folks over at a favorite blog of mine, Parent Hacks, have shared another great idea for harried new parents: ordering diapers and wipes through Amazon Subscriptions. Amazon offers 15% discounts and free shipping. (You can also order other staples such as coffee, detergent, etc.)

At first, I thought I might feel a bit guilty and indulgent about buying diapers this way, but if you recycle the packaging, buy in bulk, get a discount and avoid those yikes-we’re-out-of-diapers, gas-guzzling trips to the store, it might actually be a good thing for the planet — and for sleep-deprived new parents. Check it out. And be sure to scroll through the other great tips at Parent Hacks. What a terrific resource.

P.S. Here’s a pic of Randy, Matthew and me back in 1995 when Matt was one week old, Randy still had a mustache and we were getting about three hours of sleep a night. Watched a lot of I Love Lucy reruns at 2 a.m. — and went through a lot of diapers — in those days!
