If you're a recently separated or divorced parent, you'll want to check out a terrific new article, by Michele Kimball, over at divorce360.com: "Children Can Recover From Split if Teachers, Parents Work Together."

Returning to school after parents decide to divorce can be traumatic for a kid, and it's important for teachers to be informed so they can work with the family.

A student's home life greatly affects his school life, Kimball points out. Children don't want to feel different or isolated because of what's going on at home. Having the important adults in their lives working as a team during the back-to-school transition can make a kid feel a whole lot better.

Terrific article. Check it out.

A Singular (Mom) Sensation

If you’re a single mom, sometimes it feels like only another single mom can really know what your life is like.

Happily, writer, editor and single mom Lynn Armitage decided to make it a whole lot easier for single moms to connect.

Her new social-networking site, Singular Moms, makes it simple and fun to meet other moms, start subgroups based on your special interests, share photos and video and much more.

I like Lynn’s tag line for the site: "We’ll laugh. We’ll cry. We’ll figure it out together." Check it out.

A Clear-Eyed Look at Parenting Through Divorce

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

Pic_sitting_flower Fellow writer and mom Lynne Meredith Schreiber just invited me to check out her new website, which is terrific.

But it wasn’t until I clicked on her blog, "Nourish Cafe," that I really saw what a fearless and wonderful writer she is. Schreiber’s writing cuts close to the bone and it was painful to read at times, as she described her life as a soon-to-be single mom to three young children.

But as strong as the emotion and pain were in her blog post, there was so much love, hope and clear-eyed strength there, as well. I’m looking forward to following her journey.

Parenting Teens Just Got (a Little Bit) Easier

Our son is only starting sixth grade in the fall, but Randy and I already are getting a preview of the teen years that lie ahead. And we know we’ll have plenty of challenges and decisions to deal with.

Parenting a teen these days calls for a cool head — and solid information. The Parenting Teens Resource Network is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing news, resources and journal articles that are helpful for parents of teens. (Disclosure: I have contributed writing to this site. But I spend more time there as a parent than as a writer. There’s just so much helpful info available.)

Also, through the organization’s online Parent Forum, parents can talk to each other and ask questions of parenting experts and teens themselves.

Because, let’s face it, none of us has all the answers. Do you know what the latest “gateway” drug is? Is your teenager too old
for the pediatrician’s office? Could your student athlete be tempted to use steroids? In addition to information on drugs and alcohol abuse, the site covers gambling, internet/video game use, teen weight issues, sports and sports injuries, bullying, dating, single parenting, gender issues, teaching life skills and much more. Check it out.
